Routine traffic stop exposes licence scam

Members of the EMPD's Public Order Policing Unit came across far more than they expected while conducting patrols, in Brakpan, on Friday, last week.

The unit stopped a red Volkswagen Golf along Ergo Road and found that the vehicle’s engine and chassis numbers and licence did not correspond.

“On feeling the heat and fearing that his vehicle would be impounded, the driver decided to come clean,” said EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.

“He led the Metro Police to a person in KwaThema, who, he claimed, had sold him the fraudulent vehicle licence.

“The suspect was tracked down and apprehended in Boksburg, where it emerged that he produces fraudulent licences for both private and public vehicles.”

The 55-year-old man was arrested and faces charged of illegally producing official documents.

Police have initiated an in-depth investigation into the matter.
