Makro comments on vehicle thefts

The thefts are currently a hot topic online.

Six vehicles were stolen in the immediate surrounding area of Makro Carnival during the store’s opening yesterday (Wednesday).

According to information received from Brakpan police,  a white GWM bakkie, two silver Volkswagen Polos, a white Toyota Hilux bakkie, a silver Toyota Corolla and a white Ford Laser  were stolen between 8am and 5pm.

The thefts are currently a hot topic online, with some social media users claiming as many as 12 cars were stolen.

Lesego Maogi, Makro’s corporate brand manager, told the Herald that no incidents were reported within the direct areas where Makro had jurisdiction on the day, specifically at the store, the roads surrounding it and the two allocated parking fields on either side of the store.

“Makro had made adequate security arrangements for opening day and we will have additional security measures in place until Sunday, April 24,” said Maogi.

“The vehicle thefts that have been reported via social media occurred on the embankments of the main road (Heidelberg Road), which we had no jurisdiction over.”

The Toyota Hilux was later recovered in Leondale, Germiston, and one of the Polos was recovered in Windmill Park, Boksburg.
