Win slips from grasp
Brakpan Herald news editor Stacy Slatter narrowly missed out on a win at the 2017 Caxton Excellence Awards.
The awards were held at The Empire in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Thursday evening, last week.
Stacy was a top four finalist in the Best Headline Writing category.
The other contenders in this category were Ettienne van Rensburg of Vaalweekblad, Hilda Pretorius from Polokwane Review, Bonus Review, Capricorn Voice and Bushveld Review, and Wouter Pienaar of Potchefstroom Herald.
Stacy was named as one of two “stand out” entrants but was ultimately pipped to the post by Ettienne.
The editorial categories were judged by Jessica Pitchford (Carte Blanche, Checkpoint) Bruce Sturgeon (former CEO Caxton Newspapers), Cathy Grosvenor (former editor Springs Advertiser), Yadhana Jadoo (journalist The Citizen) and Lizette Odendaal (head of journalism Tshwane University of Technology).

Another East Rand Caxtonite, news editor of the Germiston City News Leigh Hodgson was one of the top six finalists in the Best Sport Writing category.
In the creative categories, Caxton East and South designers Claire O’Donoghue and Lori-Ann Strydom were finalists in the Ad Designer of the Year category.
Lori-Ann went on to win the Best Written and Designed Small Advertisement category.
Another Caxton East and South designer, Shavaun Cronje, was a finalist in this category.
Shavaun and Claire were both finalists in the Best Written and Designed Medium Advertisement category, with Shavaun emerging as the winner.
The annual awards are aimed at celebrating the journalistic, sales, managerial and creative talent from Caxton community publications from around the country.
The Brakpan Herald took top honours at last year’s awards, winning the Best Free Newspaper category.
Pretoria publication Rekord East, edited by Sunette Visser, is the 2017 holder of this title.
