Leachville Extension Two resident Tom Holt has recently taken over the reins as PRO (public relations officer) for the Brakpan CPF. The 39-year-old is an ordained chaplain and loves serving the community.
• Tell us about your involvement in the Brakpan CPF?
I joined the Sector Four Sub Forum in 2016 and served as a normal member until I was elected as the PRO in July.
In June, last year, I was ordained as a chaplain and that has changed my role within the organisation significantly and I’m better able to help victims of crime and others who are hurting.
• What made you join the CPF?
My concern for the community.
My background is in suicide prevention and in fighting substance abuse, so I wanted to help people with these issues.
• Why is the CPF important in the fight against crime?
It is very important because the police cannot work alone.
The CPF is the eyes and ears of the police.
• What do you think is the solution to South Africa’s crime problem?
We need harsher sentences.
If you commit murder, you should go to jail for life without parole.
• What is your occupation?
A full-time chaplain.
• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?
Studying the Bible and reading Christian books.
• If you had the power to solve one and only one problem in the world, what would it be and why?
Substance abuse.
Drugs destroy families around the world.
• What motivates you?
That I’m fulfilling my passion for helping the community.
• How would you describe yourself?
I’m humble and quiet.
• What do you see as the greatest strength of this community?
That we are united.
• What is your greatest concern for this community? What do you see as its greatest needs?
There are many social ills we need to overcome, but I believe this can be achieved if we all work together.
