Busy Easter weekend for EMPD

Mokheseng added the operations are ongoing and that Covid-19 protocols were observed during all tasks.

Officers from the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit were in Brakpan and Tsakani on Sunday to spread awareness about crime and substance abuse.

The members visited shopping centres and recreational areas where they distributed pamphlets and shared information with people.

This formed part of operations conducted by the EMPD in the Alberton, Katlehong, Thembisa, Brakpan, and Tsakani areas over the Easter weekend, which saw a runaway motor vehicle impounded, traffic fines issued to wrongdoers and intoxicated drivers arrested.

Twenty-two drivers were arrested in Katlehong on Saturday for driving under the influence of alcohol, with a further 26 motorists nabbed in Thembisa.

One of those arrested, a 33-year-old man, faces additional charges after he allegedly fled from an accident scene and assaulted an officer.

The accident took place in Elandsfontein earlier and a look-out was issued for a white Nissan NP300 after the driver failed to stop on the scene of the crash.

The bakkie was spotted by EMPD officers at a roadblock along Mahlangu Drive.

“A chase ensued until the driver was cornered on Republic Road in Olifantsfontein. When stopped and approached, the aggressive motorist assaulted an officer and broke glasses in the facility where blood was drawn from his arm,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

The man faces charges of malicious property damage, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving and assaulting a police official.

In Alberton on Sunday, 115 traffic fines for various transgressions were issued and one unroadworthy motor vehicle was temporarily discontinued from being used on the road.

Mokheseng added the operations are ongoing and that Covid-19 protocols were observed during all tasks.
