San Michele shows kindness to neighbours

The home has allowed those living in the vicinity to collect water from a borehole on their property.

The San Michele Home in Withok Estates has come to the rescue of its neighbours who have been without water for days.

Residents in some parts of Brakpan, Vlakfontein, Tsakani, Etwatwa, Benoni and surrounding areas were hit by a water supply interruption last Friday.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the water shutdown was caused by a power outage affecting Rand Water’s Mapleton Booster Station last Thursday night. The booster pump station supplies the bulk supplier’s Brakpan and Vlakfontein reservoirs.

Affected residents in Springs, Tsakani, Geluksdal, Langaville, Labore, Duduza, Masetjhaba View, Bluegum View, John Dube Village, Dalpark, Daveyton, Etwatwa and Benoni Agricultural Holdings experienced intermittent water supply as Rand Water’s pumping capacity had been reduced to 430Ml (58%) instead of the usual 730 Ml per day.

While affected by the shutdown, San Michele, a home for physically and intellectually disabled persons, has allowed those living in the vicinity to collect water from a borehole on their property.

“Our water is low but these people are struggling. They have babies and children and need to cook so they can eat,” said Bernadine Durant Vos from San Michele.

The City dispatched roving water tankers to alleviate pressure on water users who have no water supply.

There were, however, a limited number of water tankers available and the City was sourcing additional water tankers to ensure all areas are covered.
