MMC meets with informal settlers
Some of the occupants of the settlement, near Location Road, face relocation.
City of Ekurhuleni MMC for Human Settlements Dino Peterson held a public meeting on Saturday with the community of the Mgongo informal settlement, near Location Road, to discuss the future of the occupants.
The progress of the housing development in the area was also on the agenda.
The meeting was attended by settlement residents, Peterson and representatives from his department, PR councillor Riaan van Zyl as well as Ward 97 Clr Brandon Pretorius.
“The reason for the relocation is some of the occupants are located where bulk services need to be installed. The MMC’s approach was straightforward, honest and to the point,” said Pretorius.

“He also made mention of the fact that the settlement has undergone an audit, which included the numbering of structures, as well as a head count of individuals per structure.
“This is all an effort to ensure the settlement does not grow any further and to make it easier to identify new structures that do rise to be demolished per the by-laws.
“As the ward councillor, I have also requested the MMC and his department to avail themselves to a broader engagement with surrounding community members to afford them a formal update on the project and the way forward.”
Pretorius said the date for this engagement will be communicated.
