Pets are well taken care of by senior citizens
SPCA found the pets, many of whom are also in retirement, are happy and healthy.
As a part of the Brakpan SPCA’s 5 Freedoms Project, inspectors recently visited a local retirement facility to check on the animals in the care of elderly residents.
“We walked through 50 units checking for animals. We looked for multiple aspects such as condition, age, sterilisation status, nails and any welfare concerns,” said Brakpan SPCA manager Tamaryn Lombard.
“We were pleased to see how loved these animals are, that no hoarding of animals was present. Very little intervention was needed from our side.
“However, we still assisted each home with their animals by putting together a pack of goodies. This included treats, parasite control and extra support products as most of these animals are also in retirement.”
The SPCA will be visiting the facility more often to check on the animals as well as to lighten the load on these families who mostly rely on their SASSA pension to survive.
“We want to thank the supporters who have donated towards our project because you encourage us to continue.
This project is made possible by your assistance and your blessings,” said Lombard.
“Although we find ourselves with little resources to do the proactive work necessary to prevent cruelty, we always try to make a difference. Please support our inspectorate so that they can continue to do the work needed for the animals.”

The five are freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease, freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress.
The SPCA will be accomplishing the project in five ways:
• Educational and volunteer programme
• Outreach programme
• Proactive inspections
• Sterilisation and vaccination programmes
• Adoption days.
