EMPD shares tips on how your vehicle may be impounded

Your vehicle may be impounded if it is deemed abandoned on a public road or if it does not display any form of identification.

Owning a vehicle requires the driver to abide by the rules of the road; failing to do so may result in traffic officials immediately impounding vehicles when caught breaking certain rules.

EMPD media liaison officer Constable Ignatius Maphike says traffic officials must do a thorough investigation of the vehicle, which includes checking the vehicle’s condition, verifying the engine number, and recording other important information.

“The officials are obligated to let the owner of the vehicle know that his/her car has been impounded,” said Maphike.

Here are some offences of when your vehicle may be taken to the pound:
• A parking offence causing obstruction.
• Any vehicle deemed to be abandoned on a public road.
• A vehicle not displaying any form of identification.
• Buses and taxis can also be impounded for not having a permit or operating contrary to a permit.
• Parking in a tow-away zone, ambulance, or emergency services area.
• Parking on a red line or no parking area.
• Vehicles with missing or false number plates.
• Illegal street racing.
• Unroadworthy vehicles.

Maphike concluded that it is very important to make sure that your vehicle meets the requirements and standards of the National Road Traffic Safety Administration.
