Car crashes through fence into a tree

The driver was arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

A motorist was lucky to escape serious injury after his car crashed through a home’s palisade fence and then into a tree along Prince George Avenue on Saturday morning.

The owner of the home Poppie Phokane (28), heard the crash, which took place at around 10:15, and went outside to see what happened. She spotted the car in the tree. EMPD, SAPS and other first responders arrived on the scene.

No injuries were reported. The driver was, however, arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving but was later released on bail.

According to Phokane, the driver’s family arrived on Sunday morning to remove the car from the tree.

“The neighbours were also incredibly helpful. Some offered to tow the car or fix the fence. It was amazing to us how quick the neighbours were to jump in and offer help,” said Phokane.

Her husband JD Nagel (29), was not at home at the time of the accident and Phokane had to call to inform him about what happened. While the driver does not have insurance, the couple fortunately does.

“We did not have any issues so far – luckily, no break-ins or theft or troublemakers,” JD told the Brakpan Herald.

“The family of the driver was very apologetic and cooperative.”

Phokane recalled how throughout Saturday, people driving past would jokingly shout ‘You can’t park like that’ or similar phrases out their windows.

“The first three times were funny, but it got annoying,” JD said.
