Funds dry up for Clean Brakpan

An appeal has been made for Brakpan residents and businesses to support the initiative.

Further clean-ups undertaken by the Clean Brakpan Community Project will be put on hold until more funds become available.

According to Lisa Jordaan, co-founder of Clean Brakpan, resources have dried up after their latest clean-up.

The group recently cleaned the open area along Boundary Road, between Prince George Avenue and Bedford Street.

“It was shockingly dirty with so much rubbish hidden in the long grass. Sadly, there was very little support from residents and businesses in that area,” said Jordaan.

“So, our funds are now finished. All work has stopped for Clean Brakpan until we get funds again.”

The group intends to continue the work along Boundary Road once funds have been acquired.

Jordaan explained a sub-contractor and a team from a garden service did the initial work of cutting the long grass.

“Then our team of very hard workers, who are unemployed young men referred by Rata Social Services, managed by CPF patroller Charles Kok, came and cleaned up and took all the rubbish and grass away,” she added.

The Clean Brakpan community project was started at the end of last year by a group of long-time Brakpan residents and dedicated CPF members.

After the long grass was cut and the rubbish cleared, the area was transformed.

The work they do with the CPF allows them to see the link between urban decay and the increase in crime, drug abuse, GBV and other social ills.

Since their inception, they have tackled numerous neglected areas in Brakpan, including various parks and open spaces, the area outside the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court, and the Post Office depot.

They have also assisted at the Brakpan SPCA and the Tweedy Park Old Age Home. The group was formed with many projects planned for the restoration of Brakpan, wherever it is needed.

As recent events have proven, this is challenging because large amounts of money are required for equipment hire, petrol and labour.

The overgrown open space along Boundary Road in Brenthurst was in urgent need of some TLC.

Their vision is for businesses or sponsors to adopt an area, park or road and arrange a clean-up and then maintain the site.

The group has appealed to all Brakpan residents and businesses to help make Clean Brakpan a massive movement for positive change as they believe everyone deserves to live in a safe, clean and healthy environment.
