Watch: Courier van driver filmed drifting in Polokwane park
A courier van driver was filmed drifting recklessly in a Polokwane park as residents raised concerns over safety and municipal property damage.
Residents of Rhebok Avenue in Fauna Park, Polokwane, were left stunned after a courier van driver was caught on video drifting through a municipal park on Thursday evening.
In the video, shared with the Polokwane Review-Observer, the driver can be seen revving the van and skidding in circles, sending up clouds of dust as a group of people cheered him on under a nearby tree.
A local resident, who asked not to be named, described hearing the revving at around 18:30 and went outside to investigate.
“It was dark, and we heard this commotion. We found the van drifting around the park while people were sitting nearby. We were concerned as there are children, pets and pedestrians who frequent the park,” she said.
Although the group initially returned inside, the noise continued and they managed to capture footage of the reckless driving.
“The grass is dry and dusty. The driver clearly didn’t have control. It’s a courier van, not a racing car. What if he lost control and hit those people?” she added.
Attempts to report the incident to the police and the community policing forum reportedly received a ‘lukewarm’ response.
The resident said the driver eventually exited the park and sped up and down the street ‘like a maniac’ before leaving the area.
“I’ve never seen anything like that. There are places for this kind of behaviour, but not in a public park. It’s a delivery vehicle; it’s not built for this.”
The Polokwane Review-Observer has contacted the Polokwane Municipality for comment on potential damage to municipal property.
