Reshaven ready to accommodate more babies
The painting in the baby sanctuary was arranged by Nicole Heiman of The Hospital Painting Project.
ALTHOUGH Resthaven Ministries has a children’s home in Townsview, it is on the brink of opening a new baby sanctuary at 140 Alberts Street in Rosettenville.
Steve Rudd from the ministries said they are now waiting for the necessary certificates from the Department of Health. These certificates include one for the acceptability for food and one for compliance and health regulations. As soon as they have those in hand, it will be all systems go.
The painting in the baby sanctuary was arranged by Nicole Heiman of The Hospital Painting Project. “We have converted the old hospital rooms at Resthaven into a baby sanctuary. The place has had an uplift to suit babies’ needs and the rooms are painted, furnished and stocked with baby items ranging from clothes, and nappies to formulas,” explained Rudd.
He mentioned that the department said the sanctuary can provide care for up to 25 babies; however, it will start with six. This is because they want to gradually increase the number of the babies as the government support is not enough.
Rudd explained that they have already spent about R50 000 to improve the sanctuary and that with the cost of necessities such as nappies and formula, they would rather start with a smaller number of babies to ensure their well-being.
Since 2004, Resthaven Ministries has been taking care of and giving hope to people of all ages. Rudd urges the community to come forward to help sustain the ministry. “We still need to do renovations in all our homes. This includes painting, refurbishing, gutters, roofs and we would love to get AstroTurf for the children’s play area. Any kind donations will be welcomed from individuals, organisations and companies,” said Rudd.
Rudd also extended the ministry’s thanks to a volunteer, Colleen Black, who helps the ministry with administration and day-to-day chores.
