Two members of the Heidelberg SAPS became victims of an attempted hijacking on Thursday evening.
Sgt Tseko Nyambose and Sgt Ntishi Mashumo were patrolling the N3 Freeway when three men attempted to steal their vehicle.
The incident occurred at the N3 Freeway off-ramp to the R550 Kliprivier Road. The trio emerged from the side of the road and one of them opened fire.
The officers retaliated, resulting in the would-be hijackers fleeing in different directions.
Upon pursuing their attackers, the members found one man lying on the ground, having sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg.
A firearm, suspected to be a 9mm pistol, was found lying next to the injured man, who later succumbed to his injuries.
Heidelberg SAPS is on a manhunt for the two remaining men. The community is urged to come forward with any information.
