Illegal mining raided by Mondeor SAPS

"Members from Mondeor SAPS raided the camp, finding valuable equipment used by the illegal miners.”

Mondeor SAPS struck a significant blow against illegal mining just off Swartkoppies Drive, which the CHRONICLE reported on a few weeks ago.

“In an intelligence-driven operation, the camp where the illegal miners (zama zamas) were processing illegally mined minerals was detected. On June 10 members from Mondeor SAPS raided the camp, finding valuable equipment used by the illegal miners,” said Capt Nokubonga Dube from Mondeor SAPS.

All the equipment was booked into evidence and is being taken to a police facility to be destroyed.

“Breakthroughs like this severely disrupt illegal mining as the equipment is expensive to replace and restricts the production of illicit minerals and is an important aspect of the policing plan to curb illegal mining in our precinct.

“Police action against the Zama Zama will continue in different forms. SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU) has deployed an attachment of subject matter experts in fighting illegal mining, which will work with Mondeor SAPS on an ongoing basis,” said Dube.

She said a considerable amount of crime intelligence has been gathered about the illegal mining activities here and a multi-faceted policing plan put into operation, which I’m sure will continue to yield results.

“For the present, we congratulate Mondeor SAPS management and members on this valuable breakthrough and their commitment to making our precinct safe against the dangers of illegal mining,” said Dube.
