Rise of robberies in Mondeor concerns

A recent rise in robberies in Mondeor had caused panic among residents.

During one of the incidents, a learner was walking home from school when a white bakkie with two occupants approached and asked him for directions to a certain street.

The learner said he didn’t know where the street was and continued walking.

An armed masked suspect got out of the vehicle, demanding anything of value to be handed over. The learner said he had nothing of value on him, only a scientific calculator.

The suspects let him go. The parents of the learner reported this incident to the school and SAPS.

In Columbine Avenue, a learner was also approached by a suspect that was armed. The learner fled and fell. picking up an injury.

The CHRONICLE sent a media enquiry to the SAPS regarding these incidents, but no response had been received by the time of publication.

The SAPS provided the CHRONICLE with safety tips:

• Always be aware of the danger of crime and that it can happen anytime, anywhere.

• Never walk alone and don’t speak to any stranger. Be on the lookout for any strange vehicles or people.

• Walk in a well-lit area in a group. If it’s possible, try to stay away from quieter streets as it may be criminals are waiting.

• Always let someone know where you are going and how long it will take you. Never post it on social media as this may make you a target.

• Always know the emergency numbers.

• Always trust your ‘gut feeling’ when it comes to walking alone.

• Avoid going into a crowded street where you can’t walk properly as this might make you a target for a pickpocket.

• When you walk or even drive in a vehicle, try not to display any valuable as this might also make you a target.
