Golden City Rollers invite the public to join the action.

The Golden City Rollers hosted a roller derby open day at the União Portuguesa Hall in Turffontein recently.

The open day brought together enthusiasts and newcomers, giving them a taste of the high-speed, physically demanding sport. Visitors also saw a live exhibition game and received information about joining the league.

The event was a hit, with loaner gear available and a fun roller disco.

The Golden City Rollers are recruiting skaters, referees, and non-skating officials, offering training and coaching for beginners.

Anyone aged 18 or older can join, with training on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

What is roller derby?
Roller derby is a full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, where two teams of five skaters compete in jams, with the jammer scoring points by lapping opposing blockers. The sport requires speed, strength, endurance, and tactical awareness.

Key roles in roller derby:
• Jammer: Scores points by lapping opposing blockers
• Blockers: Defend and set up plays to help their jammer
• Pivot: A blocker who can become the jammer during a jam

The Golden City Rollers have their home season games coming up, featuring Chrome Chaos and Mercury Mayhem, with the final battle on May 11.
