JMPD arrests 252 drunk drivers in one week

Officials say the high number of arrests across Johannesburg is worrying, despite efforts to improve road safety.

The JMPD says it remains committed to improving road safety and reducing accidents on the city’s roads.

After a series of visible operations and increased law enforcement, the department confirmed a high number of arrests over the past week.

From April 27 to May 3, JMPD officers arrested 252 motorists for DUI of alcohol.

The arrests followed planned roadblocks and mobile stop-and-search operations carried out across all regions of Johannesburg, including the Inner City, Sandton, Soweto and Midrand.

JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, said, “While these arrests represent 252 potential tragedies prevented, the high number remains a serious concern. Driving while intoxicated is not an ‘error in judgment’, it is a deliberate choice to endanger the lives of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.”

The JMPD reminded residents and visitors that it has a zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving. Officers continue to work day and night to ensure that anyone who breaks the law faces the necessary consequences.

Motorists are urged to act responsibly. Those who plan to drink alcohol should use e-hailing services or arrange for a sober driver.
