City of Johannesburg to roll-out special meter reading and data purification process

You can read your own meter and use e-Joburg self-help portal to submit them.

The City of Johannesburg appeals to residents and businesses to allow its field meter inspectors access to read both water and electricity meters on their properties.

This audit on meters will continue until June to ensure that customers receive accurate bills and meter readings every month.

Kgamanyane Maphologela, director of customer communications for the city’s Group Finance Department, said boots will be on the ground of metering inspectors ensuring that the city gets up-to-date and accurate meter reading data.

“The city requests cooperation from residents and businesses to allow our field inspectors to obtain such accurate meter reading information and also perform data purification of meters. It is against the law for residents and businesses to refuse field inspectors access to the meters, as these are the property of the city.

“As this is a special project, field inspectors carrying out this task will provide accreditation that is valid for April, May and June only. Customers who wish to verify or query the identity of field inspectors should call 0860 56 28 74 and select option 1,” noted Maphologela.

Customers who prefer to take charge and send their meter readings themselves can do so via the e-Joburg self-help portal. Users will first have to register on the e-Joburg by visiting www.e-Joburg.org.za and complete an easy and fast registration process.

The e-Joburg also empowers customers and allow them to perform other functions online including:

• Receive your rates, water, and electricity accounts online.

• Submit meter readings when they are due.

• Pay your account to the city directly.

• Make payment arrangements, etc.
