JSPCA seeks support for shelter improvements
In honour of Mandela Day, the JSPCA is asking the community to contribute to its renovation project, creating a calmer and more enriching environment for shelter animals.
The JSPCA is calling on the community to help improve the living conditions of vulnerable animals in its care by supporting a major kennel upgrade project.
The organisation believes that every animal deserves a safe, warm and comfortable environment where it can rest, play and recover.
Many of the animals arriving at the shelter have faced neglect or difficult circumstances, and the JSPCA says better facilities will give them a calmer space to heal while they wait for a second chance at adoption.
As part of this effort, the JSPCA is planning renovations aimed at transforming its kennels into more homely and supportive spaces. The project is also being linked to Mandela Day on July 18, where members of the public are encouraged to dedicate their 67 minutes to helping others.
The shelter is inviting individuals, schools, and businesses to contribute through sponsorships, donations, or hands-on assistance.
The JSPCA is seeking a range of materials and services to complete the upgrades. These include raised dog beds and bedding to improve comfort, non-slip flooring or rubber matting for safety, and fresh paint with waterproof coatings to protect the buildings.
Shade netting is also needed to help control temperature, along with solar lighting or backup power solutions to ensure care continues during outages.
In addition to basic facilities, the organisation is aiming to improve enrichment and play areas for the animals.
Plans include outdoor exercise yards, agility equipment such as ramps, tunnels, and jumps, as well as sand pits and digging spaces.
Splash pools for warmer weather, climbing platforms at different heights, and enrichment toys are also part of the vision. Feeding bowls are also needed to support daily care routines.
The shelter is also hoping to create a more natural and calming environment. Landscaping and greenery around the kennels, along with murals or artwork, are expected to make the space feel warmer and more welcoming.
Sensory gardens with pet-safe plants and different textures are also being considered to provide mental stimulation for the animals.
The JSPCA says these improvements will not only enhance comfort but also support the emotional well-being of animals during their stay.
It is appealing to the public to come forward and help make the shelter a better temporary home for animals in need.
