Glenvista athletics coach Sabelo Dlamini continued to impress internationally when he competed in Europe, running one of the fastest times by a South African in the past decade.
Trinityhouse Glenvista athletics coach Sabelo Dlamini continues to make his mark internationally.
Dlamini, a current national champion, showcased his talent at the 2025 Folksam Grand Prix Varbeng, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger, in Sweden.
He cleared the men’s 400m hurdles in an impressive 50.07 to claim a commanding victory.
On August 9, Dlamini continued to impress, clocking his fastest time ever in Europe at the WACT Bronze EA – IFAM outdoor (Oudergem) event in Belgium. He came third in the 400m hurdles senior men’s category, finishing in 48.88.
Dlamini went to Europe with an incredible record, having claimed gold in the 400m hurdles at a Continental Tour event, earning a spot at the world championships.
Dlamini said he didn’t expect more on the European circuit because it was his first season.
“I just wanted to be consistent with the times I was running back at home, so I took my first race in Greece (Dromia) easy and won it in 49.70,” he said.
He is running these races without a sponsor, and his talent shines through regardless. He has to pay for his flight tickets, accommodation, and everything else.
“Because of these bills, my July races were basically about making back the money I had spent on flights to and around Europe. I’ve been here since July 3, and I have one more race on August 30, then I will be heading back home.”
Dlamini’s performance has recently improved because, instead of racing every three to five days, he now trains for a week or more, then sharpens up.
It improves his performance; he ran 48.88 in his last race, among the fastest times run by a South African internationally in the past decade. Before this, he ran between 49.6 and 50.8 in Europe.
“I’ve paid most of my bills, but the mentality of producing elite times is hard when you’re basically running on fumes,” he concluded.
