Fierce competition awaits in school soccer programme
The 2025 edition promises thrilling matches, mentorship opportunities, and pathways for learners to reach professional leagues.
Now in its 16th year, the Discovery Schools Soccer programme continues to make a powerful impact on youth development in South Africa, using the universal language of soccer to promote health, wellness and community engagement.
The 2025 edition promises fierce competition, as returning champions from 2024 prepare to defend their titles.
Teams including Trinityhouse Glenvista, Waterstone College, Sir John Adamson, Bracken High School and Ferndale High School are among the contenders, and local league clubs are expected to scout for emerging talent throughout the tournament.
Launched in 2009 in partnership with the Johannesburg Primary School Football Association (JPFSA), the programme has grown into one of the country’s most inspiring grassroots sports initiatives.

It provides young learners with opportunities to develop physically, emotionally and socially through structured football tournaments and mentorship.
Among its standout initiatives is the Discovery JVW High Schools Knockout Cup, which began in 2013.
The tournament has evolved into a dynamic round-robin competition that now involves educators as coaches and event organisers, further embedding the programme within the school ecosystem.
Celeste Williams, head of sponsorships at Discovery, emphasises the broader vision behind the programme: “At Discovery, we believe that healthy habits start young – and sport is one of the most powerful ways to instil those habits. School soccer offers a unique opportunity to reach learners at a formative stage, encouraging physical activity, teamwork and resilience. By investing in school-level football, we’re not just nurturing future athletes, we’re helping build healthier, more confident communities.”

Managed in collaboration with the Department of Education and Forwardzone, the Knockout Cup has become a launchpad for aspiring footballers.
Many participants have gone on to play in prestigious leagues such as the Sasol League Division, ABC Motsepe League and the HollywoodBets SuperLeague.
Open and free to the public, the event invites communities from across the region to attend and witness the next generation of soccer stars in action.
