4th Annual Comic’s Choice Awards
Media giants to honour comedy greats doing their part in taking the art of comedy to a higher level.

JOHANNESBURG – A seasoned comic once asked a group of young comedians for the definition of comedy. After much debate, the group came up with several complex suggestions.
The older comic replied to suggestions saying: “Nope. Comedy is when the audience laughs.” In that spirit, this year sees the fouth annual South African Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards (CCA’s) to celebrate laughter, which is the whole point, isn’t it?
The point of the fourth annual South African Savanna Comic’s Choice Awards hosted in partnership with various media giants is to honour comedy greats who have been taking the art to a higher level.
And more to the point, Savanna, the self-proclaimed ‘official drink of funny’ has in a fantastic coup for the industry signed a three-year title-sponsorship deal with the country’s official ceremony of funny, now known as Savanna CCA.
On August 2, The Teatro at Montecasino will host this hilarious variety show, themed The Point of Funny, comprising sketches, stand-up, impressionists and witty one-liners delivered by SA’s top comedians.
There are only six awards given over the two hours, so you’ll spend more time laughing than applauding, which is exactly what we all want. This also means that it’s really hard to win an award, so the full comedy industry comes out to recognise those lucky enough to have scooped up a Waldo statuette.
As the theme changes annually, so does the art direction, with 2014’s taking inspiration from 1980’s video game culture. It’s about playing to win: You either get the most laughs, score the most points and win, or you don’t. If the scale of this year’s stage production and technical design is anywhere close to last year’s, you’re in for a theatrical treat!
“The event is open to the public but seats are limited, so get your ticket from Computicket now. You could also win a VIP experience by voting for your favourite comedian within the only category open for public vote; The Savanna Audience Choice Award category. Visit www.comicschoice.co.za and SMS the unique code of your favourite comedian to the voting line, giving your best SA comic the chance to win,” said One-eyed Jack Media Relations Officer Darryn Lee.
The comedy industry exclusively casts votes for the remaining categories, namely: The Breakthrough Act Award, The Savanna Newcomer Award, The Comic’s Choice Comic of the Year Award, The Lifetime Achievement Award and The Times Comic’s Pen Award. The latter award is particularly special, as it honors the craft of the written word. It is awarded to the recipient who is judged by the comedy community to have made the biggest contribution by their creation of original written/drawn work.
“Of course, all the best events need the best media partners to support them, and the comedy industry thanks Mzansi Magic, The Times and Kaya FM 95.9 for helping to build comedy history,” he concluded.
