25 Blue Pea Country Market is open at Rietvlei Zoo Farm every Saturday from 8am to 1pm. Entrance to the market is free. Come and support local farmers, artists, bakers, business owners, chefs etc. Products on offer are raw honey, free-range chicken and eggs, fresh fruit and veggies, organic fertiliser (worm tea), biltong, nuts, yogurt, olives, feta cheese, pet food and treats, arts and crafts, delicious food stalls, sauces and condiments, baked goods, health and wellness products, various products from local businesses, etc. If you would like to book a stall or give a suggestion of how they can improve their service, please contact Charlene on 072 019 9601 or charlene@bluepea.co.za. 25 Niche Community Market is open every Saturday at the Walkerville Showgrounds from 9am to 2pm. Stallholders sell honey, jams, handmade natural soaps, plants, fresh produce, aloe creams, cookies and biscuits, biltong, koeksisters, fudge and candyfloss, as well as a variety of crafted goods. Fresh-food vendors include Asian food, boerewors rolls, vetkoek and Indian food. There is a gin bar, craft beer and ciders. There’s a play area for the children and pets are welcome. 26 Explore nature with a guided walk through Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve on January 26. Meet at 7am for 7.30am at entrance precinct, Peggy Vera road, Kibler Park. All fitness levels will be accommodated. Bring a hat, sunscreen, good walking shoes and water. Minimum donation of R20 per person would be appreciated. Cash is accepted on the day. 26 Simply Fresh Organic Market runs from 10am to 4pm at Mall of the South, Entrance 9, every last Sunday of every month. Look out for organic vegetables, artisan bread, free-range eggs and chicken, cheese, Lindt, cake, gluten-free cake, gourmet coffee, pastries, mocktails, gourmet sauces, smoothies, Mediterranean delicacies, raw honey and unique gifts.

FEBRUARY

2 Join a 4km guided walk (takes three hours) on Melville Koppies on February 2 and learn about who used to live there; enjoy the peace and be surprised at the ways in which animals and plants interact with each other. 2 Jozi Urban Market is taking place. Stalls, include gourmet coffee, craft beer and gin, fine wines, cocktails, exotic multicultural food, live music, local fashion and art. This urban attraction is most definitely the best hangout on the first Sunday of every month. Jozi Urban Market is situated on the fifth floor covered car park rooftop of Gold Reef Casino, which offers a spectacular view of Johannesburg. The market runs from 10am to 3pm, giving you ample time to catch a meal, relax while sipping a craft gin or beer in the chill area, listen to soft live jazz or have family fun in the free Seeff Nerf Battle Zone. There is something for everyone, including car and fitness enthusiasts.

13 SA Military History Society meets again on February 13 in the Auditorium of the Museum of Military History, Erlswold Way, Saxonwold (next to the Zoo) on February 13 at 8pm. First event will be: “Frances and Betty go to war” by Karen Horn with the main lecture “The Rise to Power of Adolf Hitler and Franklin Delano Roosevelt” by John Myburgh. Wives are welcome to come along with their husbands. Visitors are charged R30 per person, which includes tea or coffee after the lecture. 15 Stained glass workshop in the tranquil settings of Henley on Klip on February 15. Workshops lasts about three to four hours and you will complete a sun catcher which is yours to keep. All tools and materials will be provided as well as instruction and possibly a cup of tea or coffee if you can drag yourself away from your project. The workshops are aimed at people who want to try their hand at stained glass before committing to buying equipment and glass, and to those who only want a little fun. Each workshop takes a minimum of three people and a maximum of six.
