Uncertainty around rumoured taxi strike
FOURWAYS – It is still unclear whether a rumoured taxi strike outside Fourways Mall will take place on 13 September.
Last week a media report by the Business Report claimed that Fourways Mall would be one of the sites targeted by taxi strikes on 13 September. However, the Northern Taxi Liasion Committee (NTLC) says it is not aware of any such plan.
The report, published 7 September, said that the mall was going to targeted because of it’s lack of facilities for taxis which transport customers and staff to and from the shopping centre. According to the report, vehicle manufacturer Beijing Automotive Works (BAW) South African branch, as well as Sasol in Secunda would be protested as well.
According to a document from the NTLC was dated 5 September, although the organisation had heard rumours about a planned strike, but did not support it.
“We [the NTLC] know nothing about [the planned strike],” read the letter, which appears to have been signed by the organisation’s secretary general.
“We don’t like any unacceptable conduct from taxi people and wish to have a good continuing relationship with [Fourways Mall].”
Fourways Mall has also heard the rumours and has been in discussions with the NTLC since the beginning of last week.
“The reported pending strike action is not an approved strike, and the local SAPS, JMPD as well as Northern Taxi Liaison Committee will be monitoring the area on the proposed date,” said Zoe Van Onselen, head of marketing for the centre, said in a statement.
