Johanna Maja (66) who received her title deed and entered her house for the first time, said she waited

19 years to receive her RDP house. “I am very excited and I’m still trying to come to terms with this dream. I applied for this house in 2003 and I’ve been renting a shack for my entire life,” Maja said.

Makhura said his government would work with the Department of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies to stop fraud and corruption in the distribution of RDP houses in the province. “Our government is committed to making the lives of people better. That is why we are taking the issue of corruption seriously,” Makhura said.

“The houses that our government builds are meant for South African citizens only. We cannot give houses to foreign citizens while our people have no houses. We are working with the Department of Home Affairs to ensure that people who receive houses are South African citizens.”

Makhura said the government has set aside land in Diepsloot East for people who don’t qualify for RDP houses. “We have a group of people who don’t qualify for RDP houses and earn little to qualify for bonds.

He concluded, “In order to help those individuals, we have decided to set aside Diepsloot East to cater for those people. We will put in water, sewer and road infrastructure and give them stands to build the houses they want.”
