The MMC for Housing Mlungisi Mabaso handed over 300 title deeds for RDP houses to their rightful owners in Riverside View.
Mabaso, who was accompanied by Region A director, Abigail Ndlovu and Ward 96 councillor Rufus Maswazi, urged beneficiaries to keep their title deeds safe and not sell their houses.

Mabaso said one of the challenges faced by his department was a rising number of people who sell their RDP houses and go back to the informal settlements.
He also advised recipients to make a will in order to avoid fights between family members when they pass on. “We have a serious problem of people coming to us to ask for interventions after the homeowner has passed on. In order to avoid these problems, I would advise you to [have] a will that will tell us who will take over your house once you’ve passed on.”

One of the beneficiaries, Elizabeth Makgoba (72) who has lived in a shack since 1996, said she never thought this day would arrive. “I move to my house for the first time last year. I lived in a shack in Diepsloot for almost 30 years. I never thought that at this age I will have a house that I call mine. This is indeed a dream becoming a reality,” Makgoba said.
