Disabled man shoots self at police station
An inquest docket has been opened after a 76-year-old disabled man drove into Umhlali Police Station in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday and shot himself.
Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the unidentified man allegedly shot himself outside his vehicle at the police station’s premises.
Zwane added the man died instantly and a suicide note was found. A firearm suspected to be used during the shooting was also found next to him.
In a separate incident, a man identified as 47-year-old Gabriel da Silva allegedly shot and killed his wife, 45-year-old Lana Pereira Marques, before turning the gun on himself at Parkview Police Station in January.
Parkview spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said the couple were brought to the station after police responded to a domestic dispute in Parkhurst, north of Johannesburg.
While they were filling out domestic violence registration forms, Da Silva reportedly said he needed his reading glasses and left the station to fetch them from his car, added Ramovha.
Da Silva then re-entered the station with a small hidden revolver and shot Marques in the head at point-blank range.
He then reportedly shot himself in the upper body and died on the scene.
