The long wait at William Nicol

FOURWAYS - The William Nicol Drive intersection with Uranium Road continues to be a free for all for taxis.

Even a Metro police presence and Outsurance pointsmen has not been able to stop taxis’ disregard for traffic rules.

Lisa Mancer, who uses the road daily said pointsmen have become punching bags for taxi drivers. “They have no qualms. Spitting at them should they dare question their lack of driving skills, swearing at them and even trying to deliberately ride them over.”

This has led to the pointsmen vacating their posts at times.

Taxis create extra lanes to get to the front of the traffic queue. “It creates a situation where drivers behind them become more frustrated, it is just this aura of evil and hatred at the intersection,” said motorist Johannes Brits.

The road between Dainfern and Diepsloot is being upgraded to accommodate traffic from the Steyn City development.

Celine Patterson of Steyn City properties said, “Unfortunately, although Steyn City has been contributing some funding to the road upgrade, they are unable to comment on the progress or schedule for completion.”

The upgrade is estimated to be completed by April 2014.

“I see the point in the upgrades, but right now it is creating havoc on our roads,” Brits added.

He said the short-cut through Lonehill via Lonehill Boulevard was as bad. “You are stuck in traffic no matter what. When the robots are out, and there is no pointsmen, the wait to turn from Uranium Road into William Nicol Drive is unbearable,” he said.

Metro police said they were taking the threats to pointsmen seriously, and have dispatched officers to the area to calm the situation.
