Danger outside police station

DOUGLASDALE - Street markings in front of the Douglasdale police station have finally been painted, but Ward 115 councillor, Chris Santana said they should been seen as a temporary measure.

Santana said he had been engaging with the Johannesburg Roads Agency for some time regarding the dangers of crossing Troupant Avenue, to get from the parking area to the police station, and said the zebra crossing was not done as requested. He said although the initial request was to remark the pedestrian crossing, it was later agreed that the crossing needed to be raised.

He explained that although he was grateful that the roads agency had taken action and re-painted the zebra crossing, it would remain dangerous. “There is only one of the two pedestrian signs I requested,” he said.

He said painting the road was not a full time solution, because the paint wore off after three to four months due to the high intensity of traffic on the road.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, communications officer at the Douglasdale police station agreed that the road remained dangerous for pedestrians. “Residents and motorists are not stopping for pedestrians, even though they have right of way. This is creating a danger for members of the public visiting the station as well as for police officers who work at the station.”

Muthan said officers would be forced to issue fines to motorists who failed to yield for pedestrians.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency has said they are looking into the matter.
