Young golf champ on the upswing

DAINFERN - Dainfern's David Meyers is proof that dynamite comes in small packages.

The 16-year-old is often referred to as ‘young Meyers’ because of his small stature, but it has not stopped him from competing against those older – and bigger – than him.

Meyers’s love for the game started at Dainfern Country Club.

He received the Junior Golfer of the Year award in Central Gauteng in 2012, and has maintained his ranking as top junior (U19) for almost two years. The same year he won the prestigious Silver Vase tournament and the SA U17 championships.

The golfer has also represented South Africa in Indonesia and Italy and has realised his dream of being included in The Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation.

This year Meyers was ranked sixth at the SA U19 and fifth at the SA U17 championships. He won his first amateur event, The Central Gauteng Closed Championships, and represented the South African Junior side in a test against Scotland. He was selected for the U19, U23 and Challenge Inter-provincial Team and as reserve for the Premier IPT Team. He was the youngest player selected in all these teams.

He went on to win the Junior and Men’s Club Champs at Dainfern County Club. The club generously assisted him to compete in one of the most prestigious junior tournaments in the world, The Callaway World Junior, at Torrey Pines in America. There were 214 golfers from 56 countries, and the Dainfern dynamo was able to finish ninth.

Later in September he will be playing in The Glacier Junior Series Final at St Francis against 25 regional winners for a spot in the Orange Bowl Tournament in Miami.

“Dainfern Country Club would like to congratulate David on his achievements in golf and we are proud to have him as our representative. His success is testament to his hard work and dedication to the game of golf,” said Costa Spheris, golf chairperson of Dainfern Golf Club.
