H unting dogs rescued

A POACHER illegally hunting wildlife in Chartwell was surprised when four of his eight hunting dogs broke away from the pack and darted towards a local farmhouse.

Chartwell resident, Nicky Dissel, who reported the incidence of poaching in the Chartwell area (Fourways Review, week ending 13 September 2013), saw the poachers and their hunting dogs yet again and tried to scare them off.

Dissel said, “The dogs got hold of a rabbit and tore it apart! The hunter quickly grabbed the rabbit and put it in his bag but at the same time four of his dogs broke away and ran towards our house.”

Dissel called ADT so that they could apprehend the poacher but he had already fled the scene leaving four of his hunting dogs behind.

She then called Mandy Collins of the Sun Valley Residents Association who in turn contacted an animal rescue organisation.

While waiting for the rescue organisation to arrive the tired dogs, three of whom were greyhounds, napped on the road.

A neighbour brought some pellets for the dogs which they devoured within minutes.

Collins said, “You can see how hungry these dogs are. They are probably kept in small cages and given very little to eat. This is usually the case with these hunting dogs.”

The dogs were taken away by an undisclosed rescue organisation who will re-home them.

Collins explained, “We are not going to disclose the name of the rescue organisation because the poachers who use these dogs as hunting dogs will either try to reclaim them or will just steal the dogs.”

She added, “Anyone with information on the whereabouts of this poacher or anyone who suspects poaching in their area should please contact me.”
