Fourways Mall builds 8m cupcake tree for cancer

Fourways Mall has built an eight-metre tree of cupcakes to celebrate cancer awareness month.

The mall’s aim is to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer.

According to Gayle Crow, communications executive at Purple Plumm, 15 300 cupcakes were used to build the Spring-themed mural of cupcakes that were then sold to Fourways Mall customers for a small fee.

“It took over nine hours to place all 15 300 cupcakes on the frame of the tree, which weighed over 900kg, and saw teams from Fourways Mall and Cake Extreme working through the night to ensure the tree was ready to be iced the next day,” Crow said.

Once completed, the cupcakes from the tree were sold off for a minimum donation of R5. All proceeds were donated to the beneficiaries of Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer. A portion of the cupcakes were also donated to selected underprivileged schools and charities. Over R8000 was raised during the course of the morning.

“We believe in the power of awareness,” said Fourways Mall marketing manager, Marjike Arran. “The cupcake tree was a mammoth task that took hours of work and preparation but it was so worth it, as we have been able to inform our customers about childhood cancer and raise funds for the families fighting this terrible disease.”
