Man trapped under runaway crane

FOURWAYS- On Wednesday a mobile construction crane ran over a man on William Nicol Drive between Kingfisher Road and Leslie Avenue.

According to EMER-G-MED spokesperson Danielle Dooley, EMER-G-MED paramedics and other emergency services responded to the call and on arrival found a man trapped beneath a crane. Dooley said it was alleged the man was a technician who was working on the gearbox of the crane. While he was busy, the crane ran over him and he became trapped under it.

It took paramedics and the the fire department 45 minutes to free him.

Advanced Life Support paramedic Wayne Broodryk explained the technician suffered serious injuries that required advanced life support interventions. His injuries included bilateral lung contusions, a broken right shoulder, and a compound fracture to his left ankle.

Dooley said, “He was rushed to Sunninghill Hospital while he was in a critical but stable condition by EMER-G-MED and Advanced Life Support [paramedics].”

Broodryk added the man was currently in a stable condition.
