Dainfern Lions roar
DAINFERN- The Lions Football Club is growing from strength to strength and providing fun, discipline and outdoor activity to the youth of Fourways.
The club is seven years old and admits both genders, with age divisions ranging from under six to over 35.
The club holds training for didifferent age groups on Monday to Friday from 5pm to 6pm at the soccer fields inside Dainfern Golf Estate, and matches are on Saturdays and Sundays.
Chairman of the club, Nic Papas said for young members the club encouraged discipline, respect, self-confidence and manners.
“For older members, its a way to stay fit and be part of a team that participates in a league,” he said.
The club is part of the Rand Central Football League.
Head coach, Gary Avnit, who is an ex-professional soccer player said the club also had an outreach programme for disadvantaged
youth.
“We get parents of club members and members of the community to sponsor disadvantaged players so that they can be part of the club too,” he said.
Kabelo Kekane, a coach at the club said, “Soccer brings people together and through the sport people can learn to communicate. It encourages teamwork and patience which are important values for life. Life is very much in the game of soccer.”
This year the club is hoping to admit more soccer-mad members.
“ We’ve even changed the kit to Brazilian colours to celebrate the upcoming football world cup and the children are just loving it,” Papas said.
Anyone interested in joining the Dainfern Lions can register on any weekday from 4pm to 6pm or on Saturdays from 10am to 12pm.
Papas advised that only the first 250 people would be accepted.
Practise starts on the first week of February with the league matches starting in March.
