Shacks burnt to the ground in Kya Sand

KYA SAND - Douglasdale police visited Kya Sand informal settlement where 54 shacks burnt to the ground on 14 June.

According to Sergeant Nicholus Mokwena, the fire started in one shack belonging to a single man, when his primus stove exploded. The flames quickly spread through all the neighbouring shacks. Fortunately there were no fatalities or injuries but the affected families have lost all their belongings. Councillor Matome Mafokwane of Ward 96 also visited the families and handed out donations of clothes, blankets and dishes. Disaster Management and the Department of Social Welfare have been feeding the families and have also donated blankets, however the food and blankets were not enough. The Douglasdale police are urging the community to get involved by collecting and donating blankets or food for the families.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan said that those willing to make a donation are welcome to drop their goods off at the police station and they will be taken to Kya Sand informal settlement.
