Patches over potholes for time being
SUNNINGHILL- Roshan Jugadoe has been asking Johannesburg Roads Agency to fix the potholes in Barbeque Downs for a number of years.
According to him, the area has around 100 potholes which have damaged numerous cars.
The issue was brought to the attention of the city council and subsequently the roads agency in January 2010.
“There is no service delivery in this area. It is almost four years later and I am at my wits’ end,” stated Jugadoe.
He said there is a large pothole where Main Road meets Shakespeare Road, approximately 5m from the stop sign.
Heavy rainfall earlier this year has affected the state of the roads, and he wants to know why the roads have not been fixed properly.
Jugadoe is demanding to see results.
Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said they are digging up the old road and deep patching the holes in Barbeque Downs for now.
“The roads agency still needs to do reconstruction of the road, as most of the roads need to be reconstructed,” said Peters-Scheepers.
She added, “Presently there are no stormwater drains, and there is a 10-year project being discussed for the entire region for reconstruction.”
Councilor for Ward 93, Annette Deppe said, “While I can understand the frustration that the residents are experiencing, this road has always been problematic, due to the old farm service [road] that is not suitable for the volume of traffic.”
“It seems that the new budget only comes through on 1 July, so this upgrade will be done in the new financial cycle,” she added.
Deppe explained that city council omitted to tell the community that they did not have a budget to complete this surface before the end of April, as promised on 702 Talk Radio by Skhumbuzo Macozoma, the managing director of Johannesburg Roads Agency.
“We look forward to speedy work once the budget is approved,” said Deppe.
