Triple treat extra-mural activity
NORSCOT- Buzz Drama workshops help children in the foundation phase be creative, use their imagination and build up their confidence.
The drama, dance and song programme was founded by Hanneke Rauch after teaching drama at schools.
When Rauch was offered a position as the foundation phase drama teacher at Crawford Sandton, she felt like she “found her language”.
“The child whispering came naturally, especially because I wasn’t a formal teacher, I was a drama teacher. I got to play all day,” she said.
After her time at the school, she headed to London and found the perfect mix of personality and job opportunity in a drama and dance school called Perform, working with children between the ages of four and eight.
She discovered learning modules and how to apply them to the way children develop. She believed she could bring that skill set to South Africa.
With this goal in mind, she saved start-up capital, worked in London for four years, and then started building the Buzz brand in her head.
The heart of the Buzz programme is in their workshops.
“Buzz is not just for children who enjoy these activities, it is also for the introverted, for those who need help with concentration and social skills,” said Rauch.
“I want Buzz to be a home for each child.”
With a fun approach and original soundtracks to each workshop, every six months, the groups enter a new imaginary world and the material changes. At the end of a workshop, they present the material to family members to show their progress.
Buzz Drama offers school curriculum support and skill sharing with teachers. The new curriculum dictates that children should be taught character, music and sound in the life skills department, and Buzz facilitates skills used for this specific learning.
Their parties are also a hit with children. Rauch said they take the children on interactive adventures, giving them an experience as a gift.
“It is unique and authentic – they are not spectators watching a show, they are taken on a themed adventure,” she said.
Buzz Drama hosts weekly workshops at Norscot Manor with sessions full of games, song and dance.
