Residents give 67 minutes for wetland

FOURWAYS GARDENS - The Friends of the Witkoppen Wetland Park organised a clean-up as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

The Sector 3 Community Policing Forum, Fourways Mall as well as a number of residents from around the area joined in the clean-up.

Carl Houart of the Friends of Witkoppen Wetland Park said that while the clean-up was centred around completing one’s 67 minutes, it was something that they hoped to do regularly to maintain the cleanliness of the park.

Recently the park’s dam has been plagued by a growth of Kariba weed, an invasive alien species, over the entire surface but a team from Botho Projects sub-contractors was able to remove the weed before the clean-up took place.

The main litter issue in the park seemed to be the many broken bottles and discarded metal which the volunteers picked up.

The park is a well- known dog-walking spot and a haven for local children so the need for the clean-up was imperative. Ward councillor for Ward 94, John Mendelsohn, was also present at the clean-up and got involved by heaving big black bags filled with rubbish across the park.

“One must show solidarity with the residents,” Mendelsohn said. “As councillors we can’t ever expect residents to do anything we wouldn’t do ourselves.”
