NUM workers demonstrate at Megawatt Park
SUNNINGHILL - National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) workers handed over a memorandum after demonstrations at Eskom's head office.
After promises that thousands of NUM workers would descend on Eskom’s headquarters from 9am on 4 August, it appeared that a much smaller crowd reportedly handed over a memorandum to Eskom management.
According to reports, the workers demanded the right to strike at Eskom’s offices. This action comes weeks after the Labour Court granted an interdict forbidding NUM members from striking at Eskom, which is considered an essential service. The interdict was also intended to prevent NUM members from intimidating members of other trade unions.
The demonstrators carried placards with messages ranging from the indignant to ones that threatened. One read, “Board of directors (Eskom) out of the office, managers you are next.”
The exact contents of the memorandum are still unknown.
