Charity for the love of rugby

MONTECASINO - The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players Fund held a banquet with the theme, For the Love of the Game, at the Montecasino Ballroom.

The purpose of the banquet was to honour the game of rugby and its heroes.

This year’s sponsor, Seartec SA, the full Springbok squad and their management celebrated their heroes and the recipients of the fund.

To date, the fund has helped more than 400 rugby players in South Africa since its inception. Since 1980 the fund has supported victims of serious head, neck and spinal cord injuries sustained while playing rugby, and is not limited to professional players.

Founded by its current chairperson and past Springbok player and team manager, Morne du Plessis and his fellow Western Province teammates, the fund has become a household name, and the banquet has become the highlight of the rugby social calendar. More than 400 guests attended the world-class ceremony, among them Springbok captain Jean de Villiers.

“It is a privilege as the Springboks to be part of this laudable initiative,” De Villiers said. “This banquet has historically been one of celebration and honour to the game as well as its heroes. It is humbling to witness the reach and respect that it has earned over the years.”
