According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police, the 43-year-old male metro police officer pulled over a female driver in the early hours of the morning on 9 August in Fourways.
The driver was under the influence of alcohol. The Metro police officer took the woman’s driver’s licence and then asked her for cash.
Warrant officer Muthan said the driver didn’t have cash in her possession so the Metro police officer told her to draw cash from the nearest ATM.
En-route to the ATM, the driver contacted Douglasdale police. According to Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, Douglasdale police photographed the exchange of R90 from the driver to the Metro police officer and then apprehended the officer.
Warrant Officer Muthan said that the officer was arrested for corruption and is currently in the holding cells at Douglasdale Police Station.
“Douglasdale police have a zero tolerance policy towards corruption of any kind,” said Warrant Officer Muthan.
Chief Superintendent Minnaar said that the Metro police officer will appear in Randburg Court on 11 August under charges of corruption but will also be investigated by Metro police’s internal affairs division for bribery and corruption.
