Clampdown on traffic violators

LONEHILL - Following numerous complaints from the Lonehill community, Douglasdale police held an operation on the morning of 19 August to punish and deter drivers guilty of traffic violations.

The operation focused not only on traffic violations, but on community members’ concerns that taxis frequently and illegally use Lonehill as a thoroughfare to avoid traffic. However, the Lonehill Residents’ Association stressed that the purpose of the operation was not to target taxis alone, but also to penalise any drivers breaking the rules of the road.

About 30 fines were issued to drivers for a range of traffic violations, from failing to display requisite permits, to not producing a valid driving licence or licence disk.

Similar police roadblocks were held in Magaliessig and on Main Road, and will be repeated as part of an ongoing disciplinary effort on Johannesburg’s roads. Douglasdale police have undertaken to hold at least one such operation in Lonehill every month.

The residents’ association expressed gratitude to police for responding so quickly to their concerns.
