Police and community prove they’re fit and fun

NORTHRIDING - This year the police were the victors of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum Sector 1 Fun Run at Copper College in North Riding.

The fun run is an annual event for the police and community to interact with one another. The highlight of the fun run was the 10km race between the police and the community to see who was the fittest.

For two years running the community have been victorious, but this year the police pulled out all the stops by enlisting the help of the provincial police athletics team. Members of the forum and the police waited at the finish line with bated breath until the first runner appeared in view. The police’s Tebogo Koie finishe first followed by colleagues Daniel King and Johannes Mokoto. Last year’s champion from the community, German Khobo took fourth place. Captain Maseru Mabelebele was the first Douglasdale police officer to cross the finish line.

The first woman home in the 10km race was Irma Schoeman from the community and the winner of the 5km race was the community’s Michael Sherman. Participants were encouraged to bring their dogs along and Ian Campbell and his fast-as-lightening canine, George were the first human-dog duo to cross the finish line.

The junior champion for the day was 10-year-old, John Luke. Although the races were the main attraction, the fun run was also a prime opportunity for the police and community to mingle and to get to know one another. It was clear from the good sportsmanship and playful banter that the Fourways community has an excellent relationship with the members of the Douglasdale Police Station.
