Zero tolerance for drinking and driving

DOUGLASDALE - Douglasdale police's new tactical team is cracking down on illegal liquor outlets, and drinking and driving.

According to commander of operations for the team, Captain Fritz Kriel, an all-day operation was held on 5 December. The operation started with a roadblock on Witkoppen Road where 11 fines were issued for contraventions of the national road traffic act, and one person was arrested for drinking and driving. Kriel said police also recovered a silver Prado that had been stolen in Brits.

The operation then moved on to an inspection of liquor outlets in Kya Sands. Two illegal liquor outlets were shut down, a number of counterfeit DVDs and CDs were confiscated, five dangerous weapons including knives and pangas were confiscated and a fine of R5 000 was issued to a restaurant which was open at 3am.

Kriel warned that establishments in possession of restaurant licences must be closed no later than 2am. He added that drinking in public would also not be tolerated by the Douglasdale police.
