Manhole causes concern

DOUGLASDALE – Pedestrians walking up Grosvenor Road and turning right into Cumberland Avenue will have to watch their step and be careful not to fall into a manhole which has been left open for weeks.

“It’s not safe, that corner is meant for people to walk on,” said Megan McLean, a concerned Douglasdale resident. “There are children walking home from various schools in the area. If someone trips over and falls into it, it could put their lives in danger.”

Spokesperson for Joburg Roads Agency (JRA), Bertha Peters-Scheepers confirmed that the agency inspected the corner on 26 March and established that the manhole belonged to Telkom who were currently doing maintenance on the site.

“The JRA inspector has instructed them to close the cover after working hours to ensure the safety of pedestrians,” Peters-Scheepers concluded.
