Farm girl hopes to do big things in pageant
FOURWAYS - Resident Marika Scott is one of the many semi-finalists who are competing for the Mrs Commonwealth title this year.
Scott gave Fourways Review an exclusive interview on how she is preparing for the pageant and why this title means so much to her.
Scott currently has two law degrees and is a senior legal advisor. She is one of the many rare individuals that has managed to balance a professional career and a great family life. She also is a big fan of charity work and giving back to the community.
“I am diligent in caring for the needy and do hunger outreaches as often as I can. Children are very special to me as they are the future and I believe that we should use our best endeavours to encourage them to be the best they can be. I have aided orphans with food, toys and clothes in the past and nothing will give me more pleasure but to continue doing that,” she said.
Originally from the Groot Marico, Scott is a farm girl and isn’t afraid to get down and dirty. She believes it is this dedication and tenacity that makes her a cut above the rest in the pageant.
“The pageant believes that women of all ages are beautiful so there is no age restriction for entries into the Mrs Commonwealth pageant. Besides being a beauty pageant, it is certainly about being an ambassador for the needy and establishing cultural cohesion and racial harmony,” said Scott.
“It would be a huge honour if I won and it would be a great opportunity to win this pageant as I am placed in a position to reach even more needy people in the country.”
Inspired by the late Nelson Mandela, she would like to one day make a difference in society in the ways Mandela did.
“He won so many people’s hearts over by caring for all human beings equally and instilling harmony and ubuntu in South Africa and in the world. I am also buffing up on general knowledge and being of service to the community and especially the needy,” said Scott.
This year, the pageant is supporting the Pink Drive in aid of cancer research.
