Motorists took to social media to vent their frustration about the major traffic jam on Main Road on 7 June, but traffic delays are set to continue as more roads in the area are resurfaced.
The traffic delays are caused by the road resurfacing project on Main Road undertaken by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
Construction on the road is scheduled for completion on 11 June, with William Nicol Drive next in line.
According to the agency’s operations manager for marketing and communications, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, road construction works have commenced and can be noticed in Region E which comprises Fourways, Norscot and Bryanston. She added that the agency has undertaken to rehabilitate and reconstruct old streets in a six-month project which started in February and is scheduled to be completed in August.
The agency’s managing director, Sean Phillips said, “The JRA is the custodian of all roads infrastructure within the City of Joburg, and the preservation of existing infrastructure is our priority. This project will improve movement of traffic and pedestrian flow, and the risk of vehicles being damaged by potholes and other road defects will be alleviated.”

Peters-Scheepers added that JRA plans to reconstruct two lanes at a time on William Nicol Drive. Three consecutive weekends will be required for the construction to be completed. Community members are advised to plan their journey on these days, however, the reconstruction will be conducted after hours and over weekends to minimise traffic delays.
Lanes under construction on William Nicol Drive will be closed off from 8pm on Friday evenings until 4am on Monday mornings for the month of June.
The planned dates are as follows for William Nicol Drive:
- Right lanes in both directions, construction will start on 10 June at 8pm and will be completed by 4am on 14 June.
- Left lanes in both directions, construction will start on 17 June at 8pm and will be completed by 4am on 20 June.
- Middle lanes in both directions, construction will start on 24 June at 8pm and will be completed by 4am on 27 June.
