Gloves of glory for Topbox Gymnasium

FOURWAYS – Fourways fighters trained by Topbox coach Stephen Castle have an exciting weekend in the ring.

Three fighters from Fourways who train at Topbox Gymnasium won two out of three fights on 1 July. Their coach, Stephen Castle told the Fourways Review that he was excited for fighter Denis Mwale, who made his debut at the Playing with Fire Gauteng junior welterweight event.

“He had a very successful amateur career and has just turned professional,” said Castle. “In his amateur record, he won 10 times and had one loss, which he avenged by stopping his opponent.” Mwale fought Mack Rasetlho, dropped his opponent in the first round and went on to win on points. “We expected him to shine and he did. Mwale’s next fight will be in August.”

The day held a lot of ups and downs for the Topbox coach and he is excited for the future of his fighters. Young fighter Sbusiso Twani fought Jackson Chauke in the flyweight title fight in the Playing with Fire Gauteng event but the fight was stopped in round 9 in favour of Chauke. Castle believed the fight was stopped prematurely by the referee. “Twani is young and has recently joined us, we have work to do but we will be back stronger and better,” said Castle.

Luke Sutherland made his heavyweight debut in the Baptism of Fire Reborn event. He was up against the experienced Warren le Roux but still managed to stop Le Roux in the first round. Sutherland was very excited and proud of his achievement. “After stopping an undefeated fighter [Le Roux] in the first round, many fighters will be running scared,” said Castle. He added that they hoped to have Sutherland fight either Greg Oliver or Shaun Potgieter in the next few weeks.

“The whole team has been working hard for the last few weeks in preparation and also on the night. All the fighters showed that hard work pays off. I am very proud of our fighters and the coaches involved,” concluded Castle.
