Sounds of magical music set to bring tears to your eyes

MAGALIESSIG – If you are a hopeless romantic, this one's for you.

The world’s most popular musical, The Sound of Music, is currently showcasing at the Teatro in Montecasino and hopeless romantics will be taken on a magical journey of love, loss and cheer.

Based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, the story of the Von Trapp family singers is set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938.

It tells the story of Maria, played by Carmen Pretorius who takes a job as governess to a large family, while she decides whether to become a nun.

“When my character Maria becomes a nun, she is introduced to a big family as she is seen falling in love with the children of Captain Von Trapp, which is played by Andre Schwartz and eventually falling in love with their widowed father,” Pretorius said.

She added that the story sees Maria teaching the children how to sing songs that their father loved, which reminded him of his deceased wife. “Maria teaches Captain Von Trapp about what it means to love and be loved. She also helps the Von Trapp family flee to safety after the Nazi invasion of Austria,” Pretorius said.

Schwartz explained that he had done the same musical production four years ago. “I was part of the show years ago as we travelled with the show to Cape Town and Johannesburg and when Pieter Torein called me asking if I could do the South African leg again, I said yes because of my love of show production.”

He explained that what attracted him to the show was the role he played in the musical production. “The captain is a very complex character and not a lot of people know that. Also when one plays a role for way too long, it somehow sticks with you and, in a way, I missed playing the captain,” Schwartz said.

He added that production will show the audience the captain’s journey from abandoning his children to finding them back through the help of Maria and also falling in love after he had thought he would never love again after losing his wife.

The musical production will take place on Saturday at 3pm and 8pm and on Sunday at 2pm and 6pm.

Tickets start at R150 per person.
